Hello all,
I have in my possession a coin or medal that appears to be from the Russian Empire period. On one side there is the Russian double-eagle; on the other side there is a figure and some lettering, but no date. It is 42-44mm in diameter. Can anyone help me to identify this, please?
Yes indeed, silver Russian medal. Established by tsar Nikolai I in 1835 for the graduates of the men's gymnasium for "the outstanding success in science". Was issued between 1835 and (probably) 1917, with the slight differences in the coat of arms. Lettering 'Преуспевающему" means "To successful one" (in masculine), the same medal for the graduate of the woman's gymnasium would have slightly different lettering "Преуспевающей" and is believed to be more rare.
Should have diameter 42.5 or 43 mm and weight of 25.5-25.6 g. On the edge at 6 o'clock there should be a stamp "990" which means the silver content. If authentic, the auction price in Russia would vary between $300 and $1000.

Hi Glykan,
Thank you very much for your excellent help. Unfortunately you are right - there is a milled edge. c'est la vie!
