I can't make sense of it. It looks like Urdu or some other language of that part of the world, though the first word (الزمان = time??) may be an Arabic borrowing. But this is probably not from an Arab country, more like Iran / Afghanistan / Pakistan / Muslim India.
Ah! One must read from the bottom, which I didn't think of doing ─ just like the famous seal of Muhammad (as on the flag of ISIS). So it goes like this:
الزمان ─ al-zaman
حب ─ hib
يا صا ─ ya sa-
I believe عج on the second side (below the ب) means "Imam".
Problem solved. I found a nearly identical `coin` on the internet:
PERSIA, PAHLAVI: Copper Religious Token (24 mm), Imam Mahdi, RARE Token!
The same Obverse and Reverse: YA SAHEB AL-ZAMAN, the last shia Islamic faith leader Imam Mahdi (shia Messiah/Saviour/Liberator).
It seems to be handed out at some locations when you give money to charity. There are various tokens of these,
all different motives.
Hi,
This is a token. It is from Iran.
What Camerinvs said is correct. You should read the text from down to up.
The lettering on both side is:
یا صاحب الزمان عج
It means:
Oh lord of the (current) time.
That refers to last (12th) leader of Shia (Imam Mahdi) that Believed still alive.
This token is used for greeting the birthday of Imam Mahdi. People give it to each other as a gift.
It is not an expensive token.
About word "عج" (The last word):
This is an abbreviation of a sentence means: "Let's hope god make an evolvement for him."
Shia believes one day Imam Mahdi and Jesus Christ will come back. Then all mankind will live in peace and happiness. Shia believes Imam Mahdi is the 'Son Of Man' whom bible talked about him.
Thanks voor your info.
Always nice, collecting coins and learning more about their meaning.
I had never heard about the 12th Iman.
This coin and it`s story will be treasured in my collection.
