Italy: Lire vs. Lira What's the difference?

I'm seeing a change around the 1940s or 1950s.
Thanks all.

One is singular, the other plural:

─ 1 lira
─ 2, 3, 4 ... lire

Likewise:

─ 1 centesimo
─ 2, 3, 4 ... centesimi

The lira was eventually worth so little, about a 10th of a cent, that nothing was priced 1 lira (10 lire = 1 cent or ½ penny).

Thank you Camerinus. That makes sense.
