Indian head 1¢ with error

I just received this 1907 Indian Head cent today (open link in new tab for full size):



How do you explain the error? Is it a laminated planchet + a cud? Is it just a coincidence that the two are side by side, or is it that one caused the other?

Looks to be lamination peel and what you think is the cud is part of the lamination peel.

Lamination errors are caused by trapped gas or impurities on the planchet surface.

​I agree, it's just a lamination error.

Thank you both for the feedback. But I'm left with one question. Lamination errors are planchet errors, so, why wasn't the die able to strike the design entirely, i.e. the top of the A?

​Either the "A" is there, but has been covered by the peeling metal from the lamination, or the lamination caused a depression in the planchet at that point, i.e. a thin spot, which stopped that part of the "A" from being struck.

OK, thanks Steve. I think your second hypothesis is more likely. I'll look at it more closely on Monday.
