1 Louis XIV coin and a Napoleon medal

5 сообщений
From a lot of French coins I just bought. 1. A coin inscribed for Louis XIV that I cannot locate in Krause. Most in Krause and Internet have Louis XIIII. Krause also is very poor at illustrations and I cannot find any with the circular arms of France depicted on this coin. Dates seem to generally be at left above the crown but if so on this coin the date has been obliterated (looks kind of like 1691 or 1697 if you stare long enough). Does anyone know Krause number and if this is 1/4 or 1/3 ecu? 5.97gr and 28.55mm.

2. Apparently a medal for Napoleon. Most medals I can find are facing right, not left. 9.92gr and 32.38mm.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

It should be this one: 1/4 ECU 169(4?)P (Dijon). The weight is ca. 0.5 g. more than yours but your coin is a bit worn, so I guess the weight can match.

The only problem is the LUD XIV. On most coins it's written as LUD XIIII, like you can see here on the similar 1 ECU:

But this picture is from a coin struck in Paris (mintmark A). Your coin is struck in Dijon (mintmark P). There aren't many pictures for these coins in Krause, so maybe the coins struck in Dijon have lettering LUD XIV in stead of lettering LUD XIIII.
Probably collectors with a special interest in French coins have a more specialized catalog with more pictures, so hopefully they can confirm my guess.

The note for the 1 Ecu coin says some of these coins are struck over recalled ECU's. It looks like your coin is also struck over another coin (remaining "fleur de lis" and lettering under the bust).
Thanks, Essor Prof, I had come to the same conclusion as to Krause number but I would like it confirmed if possible. The LUD XIV legend is what troubles me most. I had not seen the information about coins being restruck but that does explain some of the markings on my coin.

Found an illustration of 1697 Dijon 1/4 ecu that matches mine as to inscription so I think we can say Essor Prof is correct.

Nice find. I searched the internet yesterday as well but didn't find it.
And in that article you can also see in which catalogs you can find the coin. Among them a Gadoury. I also have a Gadoury but mine starts only in 1789.
And as you can see, the coin in that article is also an overstruck coin.
