Цитата: "Quant.Geek"Ancient China: Shou and Zhang Dynasty (18th-6th Century BCE) Cowrie Shells (Hartill-1.1)
How do you know that that was actually used as money, and not just some random shell somebody picked up at the shore, and sold it as ancient?
Great question! There are several reasons why it is authentic:
1) It was bought from a very reputable seller who is also a scholar in numismatics. He has written several books including one that is used by almost all dealers. I'll keep that person a secret
2) The shell was actually covered in dirt as it was a ground find. I cleaned it up prior to taking a picture
3) The back of the shell has been removed as was custom with these primitive money and you have the natural tanning of the shell itself, which indicates the age of the shell.
4) It is not worth the effort to randomly pick up these things, remove the backing and sell them as the effort is not worth the cost to sell. These are fairly cheap...
I was wondering about the same thing too. I reckon your attribution is sound but I wonder how long before some ethically challenged eBay sellers try listing a few sea shells as high dollar antiquities.
Along the same lines, I'm wondering if the TPG pirates would be willing to grade a sea shell?
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

I wouldn't worry too much about these cowrie shells. It is the imitation cowrie shells that you really want to worry about. Those are easier to fabricate and some of them are worth a pretty penny. I don't have any, but here are a few examples:
Bronze Cowrie Shell Imitation
Bone Cowrie Shell Imitation
Mother-of-Pearl Cowrie Shell Imitation
There are others in Jade, Gold, Quartz and other materials...
Ring with biconvex lenticular section (3000BC;50AD)
In the Bronze Age, in Gaul, the bronze coins of biconvex lenticular section were used. The Gauls threw them in mass during votive cults or before crossing a river. Production continued, but this currency disappeared with the Roman conquest.
