What is the oldest aluminum coin. My oldest one is a a 1908 British West Africa 1/10 penny that is aluminum. That's the oldest one I have come across.
never kill a mockingbird: it's bad luck.
If I'm not mistaken the 1907 1/10 Penny is the oldest pure aluminium issue. Alongside the East Africa 1 Penny.

I also have the 1908 date but neither of the East African pieces.
Have a look at this recent article from The E-Sylum.

The US mint experimented with aluminum coins as early as the 1850s. At that time, aluminum was exotic and valuable. This all-denomination 1868 pattern proof set in aluminum would look really nice in a frame on my desk!

I remember reading about 1883 Madagascar Trial Pieces struck by the Paris mint in the name of Queen Ranavalona III of the Malagasy Kingdom, in aluminium.
The 1879 $4 was only a pattern:

Yes, I was looking more for actual circulating coins rather than trials or patterns.

Here is something I had forgotten about:

The article is on pp. 189─203. It's primarily about "exonumia", but it is quite detailed and says much about the early history of aluminium.

Thank you, I'll check it out.

On the second half of the title: the oldest aluminium coin in my collection is the 1917-A pfennig.

I guess that this is probably the case for many other collectors as well (none of the older aluminium coins are particularly common).
I've an aluminium medallion from 1911 commemorating the coronation of George V and Queen Mary.
Few years ago I had aluminum emergency coin from Algeria. It was issued in 1921:

Germany, 1920 50 Pfennig is the earliest one I have - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces2729.html

Plus 3 more from the next several years: 1922 3 Mark, 1923 200 Mark, and 1923 500 Mark

The earliest circulation aluminium coins are probably the 1907-08 ones from British West Africa, followed by the 1910 Greenland (Thule-Kap York) issue, and the Philippines 1913 leprosarium issue. The only pre-1900 pure aluminium coins I can find any mention of (though, to be honest, I haven't looked very hard) are:
1793 Bermuda penny (km8a) - proof restrike
1888 Columbia 5 Centavos - pattern
1891 British India, proof restrikes in several denominations
HoH

Thanks, I thought I had an early one. I will hold on to it.

I’ve got a spare 2 Aluminium British West Africa 1/10 pennies just looked at my collection I already have one and I collect by type. So both available. 1907 & 1908 both have some oxidation. But upon investigation it’s not uncommon and actually protects the surface rather than eating it away.

£20 including postage worldwide.
My oldest is a Weimar Republic 50 Pfennig 1920 F.
In Latin America the first aluminium coins were 50 centavos, 1 and 2 pesos 1938 of Paraguay

Are they not rather the 1 centavo coins from the state of Durango, Mexico?

considering Aluminum was only discovered in 1825 I am surprised to see they struck some in 1850, that 1868 set is very nice! So sad the government melted one set. So stupid!
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins

That was a local issue of the Mexican revolution. But yes, you are right.
