Hi -
In an eBay auction I got a small coin which basically looks like someone took an iron to the front and back of the coin. Through a lot of detective work and help from a veteran coin collector, I was able to figure out it was an 1830's Liberty Cap Half Dime. The date cuts off after "183" so I'm not sure of the exact year, but from what few features are left I am positive of the coin type.
So my question is this - is this coin essentially just metal slag and only worth the melt value? So much of the distinguishing features of the coin are gone so I'm wondering whether it is worth more than just as a lump of metal.
Thanks much - Chris
