Dirham - al-Rashid - 786-809 AD --- Mint Location

7 сообщений
Hello All,

I recently acquired this beautiful Abbasid Dirham and narrowed down which coin it was.
Here is the link to the Numista page:
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces52524.html
My only problem now is that I do not know what the mint location is :)

It could be :
Al-Muhammadiya mint,
Balkh mint,
Ma' dan al-Shash mint,
or: Madinat Al Salam mint

I do not know how to identify these mint marks...
Here are the photos of the coin:

Much thanks in advance:)

Hello,
Normally it's written somewhere on the margin of the reverse side (same about the year).
Perhaps you can find something here:
https://www.zeno.ru/search.php?searchid=366777
Non est totum quod splendet ut aurum
Rijkdom bestaat niet uit het hebben van veel bezittingen, maar in het hebben van weinig behoeften
I couldn't find it on Zeno... but I think I found it by translating the Arabic and comparing it to other coins...
It is the Ma' dan al-Shash mint :)

I think you can identify the mint by the number of circles on the right side of the coin on the front side... and mine has one circle which I believe means the Ma' dan al-Shash mint.

If anyone has another comments don't hesitate to comment:)

Much thanks,
ShadowyEngima
I might be able to read it, but I need a clearer pic of this area of the coin:

If your possible readings are right, it looks like it should be Al-Muhammadiya.

The year seems to be 192, I hesitate only on the first numeral (which is the "2" in Arabic. This is what it looks like and it's right after the mint:

"Year two and ninety and hundred" = سنة اثنين وتسعين ومائة

Hello!

I believe that you are correct!

Thank you very much for the help!

Much Thanks,
Shadowy Enigma :)
Small correction: "hundred" is written مئة (as often in ancient times) on your coin instead of مائة (which is now the common form, but actually a deviation from normal Arabic phonetic spelling).

That doesn't change anything to the actual identification of your coin, so no big deal, but I know some Numistists are interested in this kind of thing...
