UK 1847 Gothic Crown -- Real or Fake? [решено]

Hello,

I have the opportunity to buy this 1847 ungraded crown, but I'd like some help deciding whether it's likely to be genuine. The weight and diameter are good. I couldn't see anything wrong with the patterns or lettering, but I imagine there are some good quality fakes out there.

Does anyone see anything suspicious with this coin? Thanks.

Chris
Hello,

Honestly quite hard to say... the edge is good (which provides a strong argument in favour of genuine), but on the other hand the surfaces of the coin look a bit "sandy" and rough..... maybe this is just the photos?

I'm really very divided over it, and while I can't call it fake outright, it's not a coin I would buy if I saw those photos on Ebay or Catawiki or something.
Is it being sold by a dealer with a good reputation?
On the reverse there seems to be a die chip between the t and u of tueatur:

That should be already attested and recorded for either a real or fake coin.

I noticed the chip and compared it to photos of a pcgs graded coin on eBay, which also had that same mark.

No, not a reputable dealer, but the story is ok. He claims to have bought the coin decades ago from a dealer. Could be made up, so I'm just trying to judge from the coin itself.

Yeah, I'm with you on the surface. I did print out a photo of a graded coin and of this coin and held them to the light -- they line up perfectly. So it could be a very clever fake, but I'm tempted to take the chance.
Well, either way I wish you good luck if you do decide to take your chances.

I agree.
Pro:

contra:
the color of the coin

It's a fake.

Be very careful with gothic crowns.

I know I should be careful! That's why I asked...

What doesn't look right to you?

Thanks.
Look at this thread on Coin Community, and notice this on yours:

Now I didn't read the post in detail, so make sure you look at all the arguments for/against...

If you search "fake gothic crown" in Google Images you'll find lots of material to help.

Oh! And what about the price? Is it too good to be true? It should be close to £2000 I think.

EDIT: Compare with the graded ones in eBay (via piccick). While they have the chip in t'uetur, they don't have the "dots" at the back of the neck. Some excellent pictures there.

Firstly the edge lettering is all wrong. It should be well defined, not faint. I suspect that if you inspect the edge letters they won't point to the correct places on the details. There is also a nick near the A of Gratia which identifies this forgery.
OK, you all have convinced me, I think it's fake. Thanks for your help with this.
Thanks all for the information.
Now I know to be very carefull with these too!

A genuine crown should weigh 28 grams, more 2 grams out, it's fake. Many Chinese lead copies are right size but weigh around 22 grams. The colour of the metal is wrong and it's likely some muck metal.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.
