Looks like an Ashanti (Akan) gold weight (Ghana)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akan_goldweights
They are made in many many variations, also widely copied
They even are made as little statuettes

Hi Petrus, I am extremely impressed, I have never heard of an Ashanti gold weight until this moment, I believe you have hit the nail on the head with your suggestions and links to websites, I may remove any dirt to see if there are any punch marks etc on the item, I acquired the weight with genuine silver and copper coins the latest date 1850 so I am inclined to believe this to be genuine, the rectangular weights were quite plain, and seem to be quite early. You have given me a starting point without your help I would never have known what the bit of brass was. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

You will never find an exact match, nor any punchmarks.
Just accept it like it is, even do not clean it.
By removing the dirt, you will remove it's history...B)
Perhaps you can ask Hartmut

Definitely an Ashanti Gold weight. They were usually cast by the lost wax method in the village of use,
so it would be almost impossible to find an identical piece as the mould is destroyed as part of the production method. They are normally dated 18th to early 20th century, with later ones being more figural.

Hi Petrus/Gordon, Ah maybe that`s why I have seen similar but not the same, the Hartmut link looks very interesting but I will need to convert to English to read the article, I can create a topic and maybe learn a little more. It`s strange I certainly do not collect gold weights but feel I have an attachment to this little brass piece already, Thanks again for all your efforts links and comments.
Regards Bill
