Advice for selling coins (or finding out their price)

7 сообщений
Hi everyone,

A long time a go, when my grandmother died, I was told to look through her apartment and choose something from what was left, and I was totally drawn to this large tin full of coins.

I've had it for more than 20 years now, and today at this very moment I'm in a pretty difficult economical situation and started to wonder whether I could sell these coins (and some banknotes).

So I started investigating a bit more about coins in general, and generally I get the impression most are super common and not really worth much, but I was wondering whether you could give me advice as to how to move forward.

I live in Argentina, and most of the coins are from there. The oldest ones date from around 1895 and then most are early to mid 20th century. Then there are less but also quite a lot of coins from Israel (where my grandma was originally from) and then there are much fewer coins from the US, Europe & Latin America, around 20 different countries in total.

Anyway, I'm thinking of going to a numismatic store just to ask them if they can tell me what they are worth, but I have this slight paranoia that if there so happened to be a rare coin they will tell me it's worthless and attempt to buy it cheap.

I could research each one but not only I don't have the time (because I'm so new to this and it takes a hell of a lot of research), I also still don't understand exactly how to determine what it could be worth. Even super common coins here in Numista appear on sale for a few dollars each, which is totally different than buying them by the kilo or something.

So I guess my question is if you have advice for me in this situation, and also for example if I made a huge post with photos from each and every coin, whether you could tell me if there is any that stands out, or if this is a ridiculous thing to expect and I should leave immediately :P

Anyway, thanks a lot! :)
Posting a photo of all your coins here is by no means a bad idea, and you can trust us to tell you if we see anything worth keeping. ;)

Just to avoid getting your hopes up though, two things to bear in mind:

From experience your grandfather's tin of old coins probably won't get you any big money, so don't get too excited, and....

The coins you see for sale on Numista pages are links to auction sites with similar coins, and sometimes those sellers overvalue their coins, or they're a scarce date/type or something that could raise their value, so don't judge based on those.
I think it is better to download a Krause catalogue or to use the NGC World Coin Price Guide to determine the most valuable coins and then make their photo only.
My personal list of scammers from Numista: erniemix, yvain, CassTaylor

Thank you CassTaylor! Yeah I'm not getting my hopes up, in fact as I said I get the impression their not worth much at all... x.

Thanks a lot!! I was looking for something like that but couldn't find it. Will definitely use it :D
The reference catalogue for the Argentinian coins is.

Monedacion de la republica argentina 1883- 2013
From Hector Carlos Janson.

Every sunday in Parque Rivadavia (BsAs Capital) there is a coin fair.
You might have a look overthere.
Their gain comes from buying coins in bulk and selling them one by one.
