Strange (possibly) Roman provincial coin

6 сообщений
Hello,
Does anyone know what this coin is? I think it’s from one of the Roman provinces but not sure. The strange thing is, one of its sides is square while the other is round, and it doesn’t really look like it’s a fragment. Maybe cut into this shape in later times? Or is it the shape of the mold (if it was cast, that is) or something?

diameter: 8.5mm
thickness: 2mm
weight: 1.00g
metal: likely bronze

Hello Cuthwellis,
The obverse of your unknown coin is perfectly round, so it was below during the striking: this side was the one in the die. They were then "burrs" or "flows" on the other side, and they have been cut out in order to give to the coin a "rounder" shape.
I see! That is interesting – as is this piece. Thank you!

Hello,
I can't find what it is exactly but it does show three trophies of arms on its reverse.
Hmm, I'm not familiar with that type...all I can find is Lucius Verus? So around the 2th century, maybe?

Update—perhaps the reverse is the hemhem crown type. That probably makes it an Alexandrian coin under Trajan’s rule?
