Chinese Fakes, but fakes of what?

4 сообщений
As a part of a random lot of coins I've got what I'm sure are my first Chinese fakes (at least that I've caught on to). What I don't know is what they're supposed to be fakes of. I've dug through the catalog and can't seem to find anything that they would be imitating and this is not an area I know much about. Any thoughts?

Hello,

I can see why you'd be confused; many modern counterfeiters of Chinese machine-struck silver produce bad copies, usually combining the obverse and reverse of two different types, one or both of which may be fantasies that were only patterns or never even existed previously.

The first coin is a fantasy commemorative 10 cents, nothing more.

The second one is a fantasy of a 1 Mace 4.4 Candareens (or 20 cents) coin, with the reverse design based off a pattern Guangdong tael issued in 1904 under the Qing Guangxu Emperor:

广东是一个中国硬币欺诈的地方。其他瓷器,玉器,书法和绘画等也有相应的欺诈省份。据说假币占市场的90%以上,所以每个人都应该小心。
agreed with Taylor there more or less just fantasy, and do note that the Chinese also make copper/bronze coinage (numismatics fakes) but usually of higher valued ones.
