Hello,
I believe these had been identified as 8 Maravedis and 12, both from 1661 Spain, by the seller I bought it from, but I kinda lost the tags that came with them and would like a confirmation. Can anyone help me out? And are they listed on Numista?
Hello, it´s weird but as far as i can see about your first coin, side with the king matches 8 Maravedis of Felipe IV mint Madrid and side with shield matches 16 Maravedis of Felipe IV.
On the side with the face of the king, you can see almost all the letters from name Felipe (Philippus) and 3 "I" from IV (they wrote IV as IIII, thing so comon even in clocks till recent times). All the text also seem to be in the correct place. Check it: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces112793.html
On the other side you have the shield of a 16 Maravedis coins, not a 8 Maravedis, its different, check it: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces6086.html. Shield of your coin matches with the one of the link (Madrid mint by the way, something in comon between both side) but the side of the king... again does not
I did a fast search in spanish webs (sellers and auctioners with long experience) for a 12 Maravedis coin and, as far as i went, it only exist as a countermarked coin (even watch out 12 Maravedies in google, you will find coins that not match at all, at least the first one) , not as a proper coin (both of your coins does not have countermarks).
And by the way, i had not noticed first time i reply here, the first of your coins almost matches the weight of a 16 Maravedies coin (3.92gr - near to 4gr) but the second its too low.
I Hope and wish another Spanish user, or any other user with more experience than me can give more light about theese two

Thank you so much for your help! Hmmm...that is interesting. No wonder why I couldn’t figure out what these are so easily! I’ll try to look harder but this kind of coinage seems pretty... complicated. But oh well. I wonder if mine could be contemporary counterfeits or such (if not both of them)?

Dont worry, medieval spanish coins are such a nightmare at least till 1600 (too many kings, too many "mini" spanish states before unification) after 1600 things become a bit more easy but the appear more mints because of the colonies = new different nightmare
About if they are contemporary counterfeits i cant help you, i dont have experience on that and even i didnt saw or had in my hands any one to give you a 100% sure answer

I see. Thank you a lot anyway though! I sort of found the second one a little crude (on the reverse) and – as there was no matching coin to be found – I thought it might be a CC, but then again I suppose many coins from this era looked like that, haha. As for mediaeval Spain, well...I guess I need more studying on that...
