Hello there!
A good year ago, i came across a little box with old coins in separate little paper envelopes. I am not a coin collector, so i looked at some of them, found them to be pretty and interesting, but then i put them aside and forgot about them for a long time. A few weeks ago, i found these coins again in my room and i had a few hours of time to kill, so i started to unpack each coin and try to find information on the internet. This is how i found numista.com, too. Very helpful! I started cataloging all the coins i have here on this site and realized that half of them are medals, not coins. They are approx. 30 coins and 30 medals. All from Central/South America, all 19th century (except one 17 something and a few 19 something). You can find them here in my profile.

As i said, i am not a coin collector, but this process was a lot of fun and i even bought those paper coin holders with the clear window... i may start collecting, it had something meditative to it.

Now to the point (sorry for babbling): During my researches, i found out that one of the coins is actually valuable (the one from the title, this one i think). I tried to take photos, but the color of the coin looks a good bit brighter and clearer in reality. Also, i left it in this coin holder, maybe it should have taken it out. Is this coin real an actually worth something? I saw websites selling it here and here for a fantasy amount of money.

What do you think? Is it real? Thank you for your help! I'm starting to get hooked on this :)

Hard to say from pictures but it looks quite nice, if it would be a fake then one that is very well made. Im quite positive its real, do you have measurements of diameter and weight to the 0.1 g accuracy?

would love to see the other pieces from your lot.
there wouldn‘t be any medals with ship motives in there?

Thanks for your reply! I can't check it right now, but i remember the diameter to match the specs here on numista. The coin is a little too big for the 39mm window of the holder, so it's around 40mm. I don't know about the weight.

I set my collection to public. Feel free to browse it. But it's only the coins, not the medals. If you are interested in medals with ships, i remember there is a huge (around 6 or 7 cm) silver (?) medal from the 1965 numismatic convention (or something like that) in Argentina with a sailing boat and seagulls. But of course it's quite modern.

Liebe Grüße!
Seeing the coins in the lot im confident that its a real coin in XF+ condition.

congrats that is a lot with many beautiful south and Central american coins, perfect to start up a nice collection in this categories.

I would love to see your medals too, some can also be quite valuable. Depends of course what you have there.

Beste Grüße aus Südwest Deutschland,

Paul

That would be great, the ones not yet added to Numista we could add them in our online catalogue, each addition in valuable.

Medals are a bit hidden in Numista under Exonumia and then Medals
