Hi

Can anyone help me with identifying this coin. It is made of silver, I believe. It is approx 20.6 mm diameter,
0.9 mm thick and weighs 3.09 gram. Any information would be gratefully received as I would like to research the story behind them. Thanks to those who take the time to read this request.

Ps...It's the first time I've inserted a picture so sorry if they don't work properly.
maybe this 12th century Aleppo dirham? or a later copy?

edit add, your pictures are good, well focused, but try not to cast a shadow on the subject, move the light so the subject is fully illuminated.

Hi Mr Midnight. Thank you for your response. I wish I could move the lights but unfortunately they are recessed into the ceiling. I always have problems with taking pictures of things because of this. If I turn them off then it is too dark and I need the flash. The flash then reflects in the coins. It frustrates me badly not being able to get a good picture. If anyone reading this has any suggestions I would be grateful for them. otherwise it's carry on and wait for summer and some sun. I've looked closely at the writing on both coins and it does differ although the star and patterns are the same. I think you have pointed me in the right direction though and thank you very much for that. I had no idea where to start and I also have another that I can't identify. I'll post that one soon and maybe you would take a look when I do, thanks. When I do get a positive ID I'll post it here for future reference in case it can help someone else. Once again, thank you.
Perhaps you could redo the first image. It has the date in the margin segments.
Hi numisquare

Thanks for the tip. I've tried again and here is my effort.

I don't know if they are any better. I think I need to find a better way to do pictures of coins. They do say practice makes perfect though. At least there's minimal shadow in these but whether they are detailed enough, I don't know. I can't even recognize a date on it.
Go outside, take the photo in daylight.
Hi Cerulean

I live in the North East of England, enough said. Actually just in case you aren't aware, it's synonymous with wet miserable weather most of the time.
standing it up like that worked pretty well.
I suppose the date is not in numerals, but spelled out like
"six hundred and twelve"
i just cropped the images so they will expand to biggest possible view when clicked

Thanks Mrmidnight. It really is a pain in my aristotle, getting good photos. So much so I think I need to find a resolution to it. Going outside isn't really much of an option here unless I back things up and then try to do them on the odd sunny days we get. A half decent camera and one of those backlit tent things might do it. Then I just have to find some space to set it all up. Meanwhile I'll just plod on trying to make headway.
This is an Ayyubid dirham of Saladin [al-Nasir Salah al-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub], 570-589 / 1174-1193. It was struck in Aleppo year 579, the first year for this type with the six-pointed star. These dirhams are known for each year from 579 to 589. A very nice coin. Many thanks to Mr. Midnight for the enlargement and cropping.

Wow! Thanks numisquare. I'll take what I've learnt about the pictures and apply that to my next attempt. I really appreciate the help with identifying the coin. I don't particularly collect Islamic coins but was offered several sometime ago and couldn't refuse them. They looked so nice and were so intriguing it brought the magpie out in me. I started with silver bullion coins and ended up with proofs and anything I like or that piques my interest. Once again thanks for the help.
