ERROR COIN - Leveled flat

5 сообщений
Hello,

I have a 1990 P, U.S Nickel which had it's obverse (i.e. - "heads" side) side leveled flat by (in my limited knowledge of this type of error) by being jammed in some precarious area of the various minting machines. The heads side is flattened off to a perfectly leveled surface except for a small portion of the coin where it looks like it got jammed up (on the side of the intention) and held it there for who knows how long. The reverse side of the coin looks like it has "normal wear and tear" on it just like about every other nearly 20 year old coin that's in circulation has.

Until now, I've never seen anything like this in all of my over 40 years of coin collecting.

Does anyone have any idea what this coin's type of error is called, the rarity of it, or have any other information on this type of error coin?

Here is a photo of it.

Thank you ever so much,

Do you have image of other side? Did your write "error" on the coin flip or did you get it like that. It seems like there is a punch where the ear should be. Possibly PMD?

Hello Aaron,

Thank you for your reply. I found the nickel in my change and noticed it's oddness.
I posted another photo of it, but I guess it only took the one photo and rejected the second one.

It looks like it got rammed into something, it's all dented up in that one area, badly (like lots of pressure was on it). I posted a photo of that to, but it isn't here. That's odd.

Anyhow, I'll try to post it again.

I don't know what PMD means. ???
It looks normal under the ear spot, but it's all sanded or sheared flat.

Thank you again,
Todd

Here is the dented in area.

The backside normal wear and tear on it.

Another one of the dent (from the back side).

And the OBV.

Here is the ear area.

And another one from the REV side.

All of the lettering is still there, it just got squished in.

And the dent again (below)...

I only put it in the coin holder bc I didn't want to lose the nickel. And it sure isn't going to hurt it any of I touch it now. LoL!

Pretty kewl, huh.

PMD = Post Mint Damage. Meaning damage occurred after it left the mint.

If you look at the letters around the rim by the "squished" area you notice the letters are intact and deformed along with the coin rim which means it happened after the stamping of the coin. Otherwise it wouldn't be uniform to the squeezed area. I think this is just a damaged nickel.
