I have a 1979 South Africa long proof set of 10 coins (red box) with 2 Rand and 1 Rand in gold, 1 Rand in Silver, then others from 50 cents down to half cent. Also I have a 1979 mint set with just the 2 Rand and 1 Rand gold coins (green box). In that year the SA Mint made, according to many sources, 10,000 proof 2 Rand coins. Some of these went into the long proof sets, others went into the two-coin set, and others were released as individual coins.
What I need is help to determine the numbers of SETS produced of each. For example in 1979 did SA Mint release 1,000 long sets in the red, rectangular box and 500 of the two-coin sets in the green rectangular box?
There is no where I can find this information, and SA Mint simply refuses to provide any information, even though these sets were actually produced by them! (Frustrating to say the least!!!!) Can anyone point me in the right direction to get accurate information on the number of sets produced by SA Mint for 1979 and also other years? Cheers
I'm not sure how much help this will be but I have a 2012 edition of Hern's Handbook on South African Coins & Patterns.
Across pages 276 and 277, they list the types of Proof sets issued for 1979 but without any quantities attached:
Long Proof Set (with President Diederichs' bust to the minor coins)
Twin Proof Set
Short Proof Set (with President Diederichs' bust to the minor coins)
Proof Krugerrand
On page 175, they list all the data for the gold 2 rand 1965 to 1983 series where they state there were 20,000 domestic proof strikes for 1979 but there were 206,814 Matt coins produced for export. They also add that huge numbers of the coins have been smelted and they are now becoming scarce.
On page 169, they have a similar listing for the gold 1 rand 1965 to 1983 series and here they also state there were 20,000 domestic proof strikes for 1979 but none produced for export for this year. There is also a similar comment about large numbers having been smelted.
On page 145, they list the second decimal series of the silver (Protea) rand which indicates that there were 15,000 proof strikes for the 1979 dated coins. This figure of 15,000 is also repeated for all the 1979 proof strikes of the minor coins, 50c. down to 1/2c.
Like I said, it doesn't really answer your question but I hope it is of some help.

Thanks Radrick007. This does provide some information on the gross number of proofs struck.
I am looking to sell a couple of sets and would really love to be able to post information on the actual number of sets - I am guessing several thousand of both the long set and twin set. Maybe someone else can shed light on this.
Цитата: "muygrandeoso"Krause says 10,000 minted for the long set and 5, 000 for the short set
That would seem to tie up with the figure of 15,000 for the Diederichs' portrait base metal issues and then that would suggest a mintage of 10,000 for the twin sets (based on a total of 20,000 for the 1 & 2 rand).
