Hello, I found this coin in the samples I brought back from my trip in South Africa and I wonder if this is a known variety and if it has any value ?? Reverse is about 25 degree offset compare to others...
By the way I also get a 10 Cents – 2003 (English Leg.) with a 90° wrong orientation and it's the only country where I get such an orientation error.
I wonder how they strike their coins
I've noticed with these die rotation errors are quite common on coins from the South African Mint. (Certainly, proportionally far more common than I on coins from other mints.) In fact, when I find these die rotation errors on coins from neighbouring countries, they have also almost invariably also been struck in South Africa.
The problem isn't new either. I've seen the same thing on coins from our previous series (1965 - 1990) and even on older pre-decimal coins. I think there is something about the SA Mint's process that leads to this.
This is a big error, though. Usually they involve only a few degrees. Because of that, the coin might be slightly more valuable to someone who collects errors but, as people often say here, error coins are only worth as much as a buyer is prepared to pay for them.
(By the way, I think "VF" is a very optimistic grading for that coin. I'd put it at no more than an "F".)
