Hi,
I'm curious about why this coin was deliberately numbered? Any thoughts...
Thanks - Rick

Welcome to Numista!

Is this a silver coin? It's more common to see such countermarks on base metal coins. Edit: OK, a bronze coin since a penny!

There are many possibilities. It could be a soldier's regimental number punch during WW1 while in the trenches with nothing to do but wait. It could be an employee number or other tally of some sort.

Because it isn't possible to know, this doesn't bring any value to the coin; it actually reduces the value of the coin if it is scarce or rare. There is a thread on countermarks if you want to know more; there is also a "Numisdoc".

Many thanks for the information. I was mostly curious as to how common a practice this is (was).
