Unknown 1600s Spanish looking coins?

5 сообщений • просмотрено 146 раз
Hi Numista members,

I recently bought some old coins at a garage sale. The coins mostly consisted of Canadian and European coins from the 1800s. The following 2 coins I could not identify. Based on some photos of similar looking coins I think these may be 1600s Spanish coins. They are smaller than a quarter and appear to be made out of silver. If anyone knows what they are I would appreciate feedback.

Thanks,
Matt
These kind of cob coins were typically made in the Americas (Bolivia, Peru, Mexico), you can look into each of these countries trying to find a match. Weight will give you an idea of the denomination (1/2 real, 1 real, 2, 4, 8) although on that size they are probably towards the lower end of the scale.
Good luck.

Both have been counterstruck.
Limbru, thank you for the info. I will begin looking into coins made in the Americas during the 1600s.

Numisquare, thanks for pointing this out. I did not realize the markings in the left photo were counter-struck. I guess this means I will have to try to identify the coins based on the photo on the right which could be quite challenging. Any suggestions on countries to look at first? Also, am I right with y guess of these coins being made in the 1600s?

Again, thank you both for your help.
I don't know thtat countermarks, but the host coins are cobs as Limbru says. The left one has a date 169... then is a coin of Charles II. The right coin has the mintmark P, then is from Potosi, Bolivia.

Check the weight, but with that size I think both are 1 real.
