I'm really not sure on this one. Coinoscope didn't find anything and I didn't see anything in the catalog here, but I could've missed it. Any help is much appreciated! (Just guessing on the shipwreck and Dutch part)

Weight: 4.4 grams
Diameter: 27mm

Good morning, bradsworldcoins. The coat of arms looks like Castile and Leon, so I would say Spanish.

The full Spanish Arms include two pillars (I think the Pillars of Hercules - Straits of Gibraltar). I am noting that coins with crowned columns (I am looking at online) are mostly 18th century. Then I saw one like yours, which is 16th century:-

"Pillar Type: The very first Spanish colonial silver coin design in the New World. Struck at the Mexico, Santo Domingo, and Lima mints in the time period of 1536 to 1572 - all undated.

Design Characteristics: Hand struck cob typically on a round full-sized planchet. One side has a pair of pillars with or without waves depending on the time period. The other side displays a simple shield with lions and castles in the four quadrants and with a pomegranate wedged in at the very bottom. Click here to view pillar type cobs offered for sale."

More detailed info:

Denomination: 4 reales
Mint: Mexico
Assayer: L
Weight: 13.5 grams
Diameter: 1.3 inches

Price: $895.00 SOLD

"Pillar type cob, Charles and Joanna, assayer L, "late series" circa 1546-1553, choice extremely fine condition, nice full weight. Excellent pillars side details all perfectly centered so that the legends are complete. Equally nice full shield with a bold mint mark M at right, assayer mark L at left, nearly full crown above and surrounded by bold full legends along the periphery. A great full weight specimen. Supplied with a New World Treasures photo type Certificate of Authenticity."

Hope this helps.

Thanks so much Alex! That gets me pretty close! I'm thinking maybe a 2 Reales because of the 2 dots in the middle of the crowned pillars

Good afternoon. You are very welcome, bradsworldcoins. Re the 2 Reales, your instinct is right:

Alex, with the condition of wear and the chunk missing, what would you say the grade and value would be?

Hi bradsworldcoins. The condition is still bold on the denom/two pillar side, with the remaining inscription quite readable. On the coat of arms side, the shield and inscription are more worn. So, overall, I would say Good to Fine. But the broken flan (disc) would have to be also taken into consideration. Have you contacted any coin dealers about it for an expert opinion?

Cheers, Alex.
Yeah, that's about what I was thinking for the grade. I estimated $200+ and consulted a dealer who agreed. Thanks again for your help!
